review and unboxing and road test of a magellan 3055 gps this item was on sale down at the canadian tire store so i picked one up its a interesting unit .

I asked this question in another forum, but didn’t get a satisfactory answer. I have checked out Garmin, Lowrance, and Magellan. Lowrance has the Airmap 600C, which is the closest for aviation purposes, and price range, but I couldn’t get any good info for its’ terrestrial use, if it even has any, for that particular model. Could never get through the Lowrance phone line to talk to a customer service rep, after 2 weeks of trying, but was always put on an indefinite automated hold! I also checked out the Garmin 96C. The Lowrance seems to have more for less. As a student GA(general aviation) pilot, I am interested in a handheld unit that would serve me in the air, as well as if I had to ditch in a forrest, or unknown area, etc,and lived to walk my way out! Just trying to find a unit that has the best of both aviation and terrestrial applications. Want to stay within the 300-500 dollar range. Can be flexible within a 100 dollars more if necessary. Any good suggestions?

It’s a Magellan 500.

I am now testing a garmin GPS. I love it, But ware the garmin is great on re-routing you away from different situations, the Magellan cant. Or can it? My questions are:

Can you have poi displayed on garmins map screen like you can with the Magellan? While driveing around you have have magellan show gas stations, ATM’s, or what ever you want displayed as a icon on the map as you are driveing. And in a new area that is a real help. Can you set the garmin to do the same? So far all i can see is you can do a local search around you and just get a list.

But my Magellan sent me to a customers house and had me drive over a verry bad dirt and rockey road, and the garmin had a feature the let me select different options to avoid when giveing me directions like no tole road, no car pool lanes, and NO un-paved roads. The garmin was great with that.

Does Magellan have a selecton feature one one of there other models that lets me avoid dirt/unpaved roads when it routs me?

Can I set up different POI to always be displayed on any garmin models?

I have learned the Magellan seems to be more accurate on it’s cracking then the garmin. No jumping around. At least here in Bullhead City AZ

www.uberpulse.com At the Pepcom event last night I spoke with Magellan VP Christian Bubenheim who’s expecting 3.5″ GPS car navigation systems to fall below 0 during Thanksgiving’s Black Friday. Although, this will be a one time event this year, the Magellan exec anticipates that consumers will be able to find devices across the different manufacturers by mid-next year. Funny enough, that’s exactly when Germany-based company Becker plans to introduce its high-end GPS systems, said Becker’s MarCom manager Daniela Frohlich (pictured). The German automotive accessory company, known for its high-quality car audio and GPS systems for Mercedes-Benz and Porsche, is going after Garmin, Magellan, Mio and TomTom GPS high-end business in the US, with three GPS systems, all including a lifetime traffic information feed. With all the devices you’ll also be able to watch videos and photos, listen to music and adjust the screen’s mood light/brightness. The 3.5″ entry-level GPS device will cost 0, whereas the top of the line will fetch 0 with Bluetooth connectivity et al. Now, it’s going to be a tough decision: between and 0… what would you choose? :-) www.uberpulse.com
