A little about the methodology behind the tests… STREAMING VIDEO TEST The Auckland CBD Britomart location was chosen for this test as both networks’ websites showed 3G coverage in the area. Two new Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 mobile phones were used in this test. One mobile was supplied by Telecom using a Telecom SIM card, the other was bought from a Vodafone store and used the Vodafone SIM card supplied with the phone. Both mobiles were fully charged at the start of the test, running pre-installed software and on the same Operating System. Prior to the test, both phones had nothing saved to the memory. The search history was cleared on each mobile. The mobile’s YouTube application was used to search ‘Avatar HD’. The time recorded is the time taken from the link being pressed (when it lit up) to the time the first image of the 2m22sec ‘Avatar HD 1080p Trailer’ video appeared on the screen. The test took place at 1.42pm on 23 September 2010 at Britomart Station, downtown Auckland — GPS location 36°50′38.1″S, 174°46′3.37″E. The test was recorded and the times shown here are taken from that recording. The times show the mobile using the Telecom XT network gave a faster result than the mobile phone using the Vodafone network: 2 seconds for Telecom versus 3.76 seconds for Vodafone.
