What is the study about?
The University of Iowa Public Policy Center is conducting a national study to evaluate public response to the new mileage-based road user charge system. This system could one day replace the gas tax. We are looking for participants to help us develop and test the best possible system for vehicle drivers.
I’m looking for a GPS receiver that I can use for back-country navigating in third world countries where no good commercial GPS maps are available. I need very basic compass and waypoint features, but no mapping.

Why do GPS navigation units built in to cars cost thousands extra, when you can buy a GPS navigation unit from circuit city or something that only costs a couple hundred? Is there a big difference in something I’m not seeing?
I want one that is accurate, has a color screen, can store pocket queries information for paperless geocaching, and has an averaging feature to help in placing geocaches.

It may not matter that I own a Palm 680 device since the receiver should work with either windows or palm. I live just outside the city and spend a third of my time driving in the city. I’m looking for some performance testing to backup an answer.
I currently use a 3 year old Garmin eTrex. It loses signal as soon as I go into the sparsest treecover. Are the newer more expensive units more sensitive so that they find the signal when in the woods?
